Exibition in Fotografia Europea 2018 Reggio Emilia

The photography festival “Fotografia Europea” is going to start on 20th April in Reggio Emilia. This “kermesse” has been taking place every year for more than a decade and it involves hundreds of professional and amateur photographers.

The theme for this year is “Revolutions. Rebellions, Changes, Utopias”.

As professional photographer I had the great opportunity to set up my exhibition at the Hotel Posta, which is located in the city centre of Reggio Emilia. Through several series of pictures I could show many experiences I was able to live at the forefront in the field of fine art photography in the 20th century.

The CHANGE from analogic to digital photography is the main theme regarding my professional career. I lived this switch since the beginning in 1999 when after 30 years of film, I bought my first digital back Imacon for Hasselblad 18mln pxl. It worked like a traditional digital back on an old modified by me ELX.

I used to use a film camera which took pictures on a digital sensor. The change was happening fast and it got to a conclusion after a few years with a sharp decrease in demand for film as the quick and easy management of digital photography had taken over.

At first, it was not easy to be fully aware of these changes.  Not only did it involve getting new equipment but also change the way of planning the final result. The shoot and wait time to be able to verify the final result were now so much shorter  that I barely realized what was happening.

There was no Polaroid to test, no more nervous wait to see the developed film, no dark room. There was now an immediate check of the shot, certainty on the result and delivery to the client.  It sounds all wonderful but maybe too easy.

Something was telling me that there would be other issues to deal with.

One of my first great digital work was the reproduction of the watercoloured plates by Ulisse Aldrovandi for the University of Bologna. The pages of this collection by the great scientist have been reproduced in high quality and excellence. It was in the year 2000.

Il 20 aprile 2018 inizia a Reggio Emilia Fotografia Europea. Ormai da oltre un decennio si svolge questa “kermesse” che coinvolge centinaia di fotografi professionisti e amatori.           SABATO 5 MAGGIO PRESENTAZIONE ORE 11,00   HOTEL  POSTA REGGIO EMILIA 

Quest’ anno il tema riguarda “Rivoluzioni. Ribellioni, Cambiamenti, Utopie” . Come fotografo professionista ho avuto la grande opportunità di poter esporre presso l’ Hotel Posta, in pieno centro storico a Reggio Emilia, e  mostrare e aprire con una serie di fotografie alcune esperienze che dal secolo scorso ho potuto vivere sempre in prima linea sul settore della fotografia legata all’ arte.  Il tema per quanto mi riguarda è soprattutto quello del CAMBIAMENTO dalla fotografia analogica a quella digitale.  Cambiamento vissuto da subito intorno al 1999 quando, dopo trent’ anni di pellicola di tutti i formati,  acquistai un mio primo dorso Imacon per Hasselblad da 18mln di pxl .  Questo funzionava come il dorso tradizionale su una vecchia ELX modificata (da me) . In pratica utilizzavo una fotocamera per pellicola che raccoglieva le immagini sul sensore digitale. Di per se il cambiamento era in atto  e si concluse qualche anno dopo per la richiesta sempre inferiore delle riprese in analogico e per la velocità e la gestione, pressochè immediata, delle fotografie in digitale. 

La strada della consapevolezza sui cambiamenti era però ancora lunga.  Non si trattava solo di cambiare supporto, ma si doveva cambiare il modo di ragionare sul prodotto finale. Le tempistiche di scatto e di attesa (e di verifica dello stesso) si erano abbreviate in modo molto importante quasi senza che me ne potessi rendere conto.

Niente Polaroid di prova, niente attese ansiose del film sviluppato, nessuna camera oscura,  verifica immediata dello scatto e di correzioni, Certezza ( ? ) del risultato e consegna al cliente. Tutto splendido ma forse troppo facile…. Qualcosa diceva che ci sarebbero stati altri problemi da affrontare.

Una dei primi grandi lavori in digitale fu la riproduzione delle tavole acquerellate di Ulisse Aldrovandi per l’ Università di Bologna.  Una raccolta del grande scienziato di cui si possono vedere le pagine riprodotte in modo ottimale .  Era l’ anno 2000.
